What is an Australian Labradoodle?
The original Australian Labradoodle (ALD) dates back to the early 1980's, and originated in none other than Australia. They were initially a cross between a Poodle and a Labrador Retriever and bred mostly for service and therapy work. But as time passed on, other breeds were infused in an attempt to produce a more consistent, allergy friendly coat and conformation. The English cocker spaniel, along with early reports of water spaniel were among the breeds introduced to the labradoodle. The combination of these breeds make up what we know as the Australian Labradoodle. It is very important to note that there is no Aussie or Australian Shepherd in this breed. Nor are they to be confused with Labradoodles that are often first generation, meaning a poodle bred with a labrador. The Australian Labradoodle is multi-generational, meaning it takes at least 5 generations of ALD paired with ALD to be considered full bred. This ensures the breed is consistent in coat, confirmation, and temperament.
